The Luanshya district is Zambia's most densely populated region and as a result it's forests have been disappearing. Through a holistic approach that integrates livelihood development with ecological restoration, the project supports farmers to restore the native Miombo woodlands that are disappearing from the region. By employing assisted natural regeneration of of trees and introducing economic activities such as bioenergy and honey production, local communities can restore their forests. The farmer population benefits from diversified jobs, higher incomes and new skills. The project establishes market linkages between small-scale farmers and local private sector companies. In addition, this project looks to aid farmers in obtaining ownership of land in order to secure the sustainability and longetivity of the conservation and livelihood outcomes.
RCPI is the lead international partner in develping a global grant WASH project for rural villages in the Rajsamand District of Rajasthan, India. In these semi-arid areas there is a great need to imprive water management and availability as well as to significantly improve hygiene practices. The majority of the population resort to open defacation, many schools do not have adequate toilet facilities for boys and girls and do not have hand washing facilities or hygiene education. Working with RC Udaipur Heritage and JatanSanthan, an experienced project partner, our project aims to provide schools and the community with hygiene training and education, install or upgrade school and anganwadi toilet facilities and build water management capacity. We expect to reduce water and hygiene related illnesses, improve school attendance and build water management capacities in five villages.
In 1985, with the launch of its flagship PolioPlus program, Rotary became the visionary organization to take on the ambitious goal to end polio worldwide. At that time, polio crippled more than 350,000 children per year in 125 countries. Over the next 30 years, we have mobilized other partners, governments, and communities to immunize the world’s children against polio. We’ve kept our promise to work toward eradicating this disease, and the leadership, commitment, and generosity of Rotary members has brought the world 99.9 percent of the way there.
