Robert Hajastek: Today we had a field trip to one of the preserved bunkers along the border with Austria. In 1935-1938 Czechoslovakia build a defense line along its borders with Germany and Austria to withstand a possible attack. On of the parts finished was the defense of Petrzalka, which consisted of 15 smaller and bigger bunkers. We visited Bunker BS4 close to border crossing Berg. Mr. Robert Halastek representing an NGO responsible for the renovation gave us a very interesting guided tour. We learnt a lot about WWII history. They are a group of volunteers who finance the renovations themselves. More on www.mpo.sk.

Presentation of Mr. Peter Ivan (METRO Bratislava a.s.): Mr. Peter Ivan is the CEO of METRO Bratislava a.s., and presented the project of the new bridge in Bratislava that will replace “Stary most”. Mr. Ivan started by describing the history of Petrzalka in the 70’s, and the pre-built infrastructure to support a future transport system, so called “green lane”. He went on describing all the ideas that the government had, including a metro system, a VAL system, and the tram system. Most of the projects were incomplete or never started due to financial issues and/or government changes. It was also presented the ideas of the reconstruction of “Stary most” and then the reason in deciding to have it demolished and have a new one built. The new bridge should look similar to the old version, but with modern style and colors. It will only be accessible for trams, cyclists, and pedestrians. The tram plan into Petrzalka was also shared, there are originally 2 parts, but only the first part is realistically feasible. The trams should go into the middle of Petrzalka, and will consist of two-way trams. The project has an estimate deadline of 15.12.2015. The deadline has to be met, as EU funds will cover until that date. What is not done until then will have to be paid by the city. The costs of the project are financially covered by the EU (85%), the Slovak Government (10%), and by the city of Bratislava (5%). The presentation was ended with a slideshow of pictures of the demolishment of the bridge and the construction of the new one.
